Artist Statement

The results of the visceral act of applying paint to canvas is what inspires and surprises me. I suspect that the shapes or lines that enter the paintings are from things I've seen or heard in every day life that have been jumbled and stored in the subconscious. I begin with random blade strokes that evolve into abstract compositions that may appear as indeterminate shapes. Color defines the shape and line. Generally the canvas is small with thick gestural strokes. I rely on mistakes, accidents, and chance as a way for the subconscious to reach the rational mind, and pay more attention to what I'm not intending than what I am intending. In fact, what I intend to do often interferes with what is actually done. My goal is to to stay out of the way.
